Cockroach Control in Salem

Salem is a small rural community in southern Taylor County, along US 19 and county roads between Perry and Steinhatchee in Florida's Big Bend. There is no town center, just homes, churches, farms and hunting camps scattered across miles of planted pine, wet flatwoods and cypress, with the Gulf coast salt marsh a few miles to the west.

Nearly every roach problem in Salem begins outdoors. The timberland and wetlands around homes hold large numbers of palmetto bugs and Florida woods roaches, and camps and cabins that sit closed for weeks give them time to move in. Recent hurricanes have also hit this part of Taylor County hard, and storm damage and debris have added new shelter and new entry points.

Idalia, Debby and Helene

Southern Taylor County took three hurricanes in about a year. Hurricane Idalia made landfall near Keaton Beach in August 2023, Hurricane Debby came ashore near Steinhatchee in August 2024, and Hurricane Helene made landfall in the Big Bend that September as a major hurricane. Downed pines, damaged roofs and debris piles were widespread around Salem. That damage opens attics and walls to roaches, and fallen timber left near homes becomes new habitat.

Pine Flatwoods and Timber

Salem is surrounded by planted pine and natural flatwoods, much of it in commercial timber. The woods hold thick layers of pine straw, leaf litter and fallen logs, which is ideal habitat for Florida woods roaches and palmetto bugs. When stands are harvested or burned, roaches move out of the woods toward the nearest buildings. Keeping a cleared, dry strip between the tree line and the house helps.

Cypress, Swamps and High Water

Low ground, cypress domes and wet flatwoods are common around Salem, and the water table sits close to the surface for much of the year. Heavy summer rain fills ditches and floods low spots, pushing ground-dwelling roaches up into crawlspaces, sheds and garages. Good drainage around the house and a working vapor barrier under raised homes help.

Hunting and Weekend Camps

Hunting camps and weekend cabins are common on the timberland around Salem. They sit closed for weeks between visits, often with stored food, cardboard and dry drains. Roaches build up quickly in these conditions, so a walk-through on arrival, with a look under sinks and in food storage, catches problems early. Storing supplies in sealed bins between visits helps a lot.

Sheds, Barns and Well Houses

Rural properties usually include sheds, barns, pump houses and carports, and most homes rely on private wells and septic systems. Outbuildings stay dark and undisturbed, and the gaps where water and septic lines enter the home are common entry points. Checking these spots once or twice a year is a simple habit that makes a difference.

Cold Snaps

Salem sees frost and occasional hard freezes in winter. Cold weather slows outdoor roaches but sends them into crawlspaces, sheds and walls, so late fall is the best time to seal gaps, screen vents and move woodpiles away from the house.

Woodstoves and fireplaces used on cold nights make firewood storage worth thinking about too. Bring in only what you will burn that day, and keep the main stack off the ground and well away from the walls, since firewood is a favorite hiding place for woods roaches.
