Cockroach Control in Opa-locka

Opa-locka is a small city in northern Miami-Dade County, between Hialeah and Miami Gardens. It was founded in 1926 by aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss, who built it around an "Arabian Nights" theme, and it has the largest collection of Moorish Revival architecture in the Western Hemisphere, including the domed and minareted City Hall. The city includes these historic buildings, 1950s-1970s block homes, apartments and duplexes, a large industrial district and the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport.

Hot and humid year-round with a long rainy season and canals, Opa-locka sees heavy roach pressure. German cockroaches are the most common indoor problem in apartments, duplexes and older homes, and American cockroaches come up from sewers and canals.

Moorish Revival Architecture

Glenn Curtiss and architect Bernhardt Muller built Opa-locka with domes, minarets and horseshoe arches, and more than 20 of those buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places, including City Hall. Their stucco walls, flat roofs and 1920s plumbing have developed cracks and gaps over nearly a century. Sealing gaps around pipes, repairing stucco cracks at the foundation and maintaining roof drainage help protect these landmarks from roaches.

Glenn Curtiss's Dream City

Curtiss, who also developed Hialeah and Miami Springs, chose the Arabian Nights theme for Opa-locka in the 1920s boom. The 1926 hurricane and the bust stalled his plans, but the landmark buildings he left make the city unique.

More From Around Opa Locka

Historic Moorish Revival Housing Stock

Opa-locka's distinctive early-20th-century Moorish Revival buildings bring older construction details and aging plumbing that a specialist accounts for during inspection.

Dense Older Multifamily Buildings

A large share of housing here is older multifamily construction, where German cockroaches can move between units through shared walls and plumbing.

An Airport-Adjacent Industrial Edge

Neighborhoods bordering Opa-locka Executive Airport and nearby industrial parcels see a different mix of commercial and warehouse-adjacent service needs.

Apartments and Duplexes

Much of Opa-locka's housing is apartments and duplexes where German cockroaches spread through shared walls and plumbing. Coordinated treatment across buildings, sealed pipe penetrations and early reporting work best.

Block Homes

Single-family neighborhoods have 1950s-70s block homes, many with add-on rooms. Gaps where additions meet the house, jalousies and pipe openings let roaches in; sealing those helps.

Industrial District and Airport

A large industrial area and the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport border the city. Warehouses, loading docks and cardboard attract roaches; regular inspections help nearby neighborhoods.

Canals and Sewers

Canals cross the city, and heavy rain raises water levels and pushes American cockroaches out of drains. Keeping covers on helps.

The Rainy Season

From May through October, heavy storms flood streets. Keeping gutters clear and drain covers on help.

After Hurricanes

Hurricanes Andrew in 1992, Wilma in 2005 and Irma in 2017 damaged buildings. Debris and wet materials shelter roaches; prompt cleanup helps.

Year-Round Heat

Opa-locka never gets cold enough to slow roaches.

Rentals

Many homes are rentals. Turnover and used furniture spread German cockroaches; inspecting items helps.

Used Furniture and Appliances

Used items often carry German cockroaches. Inspecting before bringing them in helps.

Window Units

Older homes often use window units. Sealing around them helps.

Trash and Dumpsters

Dumpsters near apartments attract roaches. Keeping lids closed helps.

Yards and Fruit Trees

Fallen fruit from mango and avocado trees attracts roaches; picking it up helps.

Specialists Who Speak Your Language

Many specialists serving Opa-locka speak Spanish or Haitian Creole; mention your preference when you call.

Pets and Pet Food

Pet food left out overnight draws roaches; storing it sealed helps.

Moving to Opa-locka

New residents are often surprised by roaches in older buildings. Sealing and coordinated treatment handle most of it.

Churches and Community Centers

Churches and community centers host meals and events. Kitchens used occasionally benefit from periodic checks.

Prevention Steps That Fit Opa-locka

Which Roach Is It?

American (palmetto bug)1.5-2 inches, reddish-brownGarages, drains, sheds, crawlspaces
Smokybrown1-1.5 inches, dark mahoganyAttics, gutters, trees, porch lights

Australian1.25 inches, yellow shoulder stripesPlants, yards, sunrooms

Reasonable First Steps

Check under sinks and behind appliances after dark, look in garages, sheds and utility areas, note what you see and where, and take a photo with a coin for scale. That tells a specialist whether you're dealing with an indoor German cockroach problem or outdoor species wandering in.

What to Expect When You Call

Tell us your neighborhood or road, what type of home you have and where you've been seeing roaches. We'll connect you with an independent specialist who covers Miami-Dade County, and pricing is discussed directly before any work begins.

Restoring the Historic District

Opa-locka has worked for years to restore its historic buildings, including City Hall, the old train station and several Moorish Revival homes, many of which had fallen into disrepair. Vacant and partly restored buildings with open walls, dry drains and stored materials give German and American cockroaches shelter close to occupied homes and businesses. Sealing buildings as restoration progresses, keeping vacant structures closed up and removing debris promptly help the whole neighborhood.

Street Flooding

Parts of Opa-locka sit low and drain slowly, and heavy rain can flood streets for hours. Floodwater drives American cockroaches out of storm drains and sewers into yards, garages and ground-floor rooms. Keeping floor drains covered, sealing gaps around ground-level pipes and directing downspouts away from the house help during these events.
